Overview
The existing news experience had low engagement despite a loyal user base. Content was disorganized, experiences were breaking, and there was no easy way for users to find the most relevant or recent stories.
Opportunity
Users needed a clearer way to browse news by category and catch up on the latest stories quickly. The experience also had to accommodate both English and Spanish content, with Spanish text requiring more space and Spanish-speaking users showing a stronger preference for video content
Needs
Ad placement was a core requirement since it's how the app monetizes. Every design decision had to balance user experience with ad visibility. We also had to leverage the existing web article experience in certain areas, which limited how much we could redesign end to end.
Contraints
The engineering team was offshore, which meant the system had to be well-documented and self-explanatory. Before any design work began, we also had to make the case to leadership that investing time in a system would pay off in long-term velocity.

Solution
A curated section view gives stories visual hierarchy through varied card sizes, helping users identify top stories at a glance. A latest timeline view surfaces the most recent content for users who want to stay current. Both views were built to accommodate Spanish-language content through flexible type scales and a three-line text limit on components.
