Overview
I led the creation of a unified design system for NBC Local's iOS and Android apps across 23 markets.
Opportunity
There was no standardized design system in place. Features were being built ad-hoc, leading to inconsistencies across apps and slow, unpredictable handoffs between designers and engineers.
Needs
The team needed a scalable white-label system that could serve 23 markets across two networks, support English and Spanish-language experiences, and allow branding and content to be swapped without rebuilding components.
Contraints
The engineering team was offshore, which meant the system had to be well-documented and self-explanatory. Before any design work began, we also had to make the case to leadership that investing time in a system would pay off in long-term velocity.
Solution
The system created a more predictable workflow between design and engineering, reduced ad-hoc decision-making, and made it possible to scale features across 23 markets without rebuilding from scratch.
